Due to the newsletter about us, Read the stories of some of the incredible women and girls that HOPDEV supports! The following are just a few of the changes reported by thousands of women, girls, their families, and the host communities we have served.
IVONNE
Is a Congolese mother with five children, arrived at Dzaleka in 2010. The year after arriving, while received loans from HOPDEV, she was raped by an unidentified person. She became pregnant shortly after the incident and the child is believed to be fathered by an unidentified person. Yvonne has also been raped again since then. This situation has angered her husband and he has abandoned her and rejected the child. In addition, the neighbors call her ‘An unidentified woman’. Yvonne does not consider her neighbors a source of support. She was selected for the business training. She’s very satisfied and thankful to HOPDEV, as she noticed in her following quote: “I am thankful to HOPDEV for providing me this opportunity, before, people ignored that I existed but now I am somebody”.
SAUDA BABILE
Is a Congolese mother with five children, arrived at Dzaleka in 2018. The year after arriving, while received loans from HOPDEV, She was selected for the business training. She’s very satisfied and thankful to HOPDEV as well as noticed in her following quote: “I am thankful to HOPDEV for providing me this opportunity and the amount of money that started my small business of selling Small fishes and with the honor I feel comfortable with my startup capital from HOPDEV to feed my children, before, people in the community ignored that I existed but now I am somebody
JANNET
Is a Single mother and widow of six children and after the husband has been divorced her and killed during the Civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and was left with six children, and Soon after she has been selected for the tailoring training vocational skills, she had this to say: “My role changed. Before, I had to resort to prostitution and sale and exchange of sex-survive in order to be able to provide for my children. Now I am making clothes. I hope to continue doing lot of things by myself to feed my children.”
REGINNA
Regina fled the Republic democratic of Congo (DRC) to Malawi Dzaleka refugee Camp to escape married as a child. By the support of HOPDEV I learned new skills to support my self-confident and my young sister Mariam in their new home. She quoted ‘’He has started threaten my family. And where I became angry and afraid. I was very young and I couldn’t handle the Marriage. When my father saw all that he told us to come here. I bought my younger sister because my father knew that if she remained behind, the she might encounter similar problems. Where I feel that I have now more freedom. And we were welcomed by HOPDEV and we have Tailoring. From that we can earn money for our living and our future.
IRAKOZE
She is living in Dzaleka Refugee camp since 2021. She is 19 Years old a girls from RWANDA where is among the East Africa country. Where she is telling her story: Irakoze is the third born in a family of 7 children. Since the following parents’ divorced since she had 13 years old, Irakoze moved with Jobless Mother. In fact that her mother could not effort to shoulders to feed or responsibilities to support seven children, and where Irakoze taking decision to drop out the school to stay home and help her mother with chores as well as piece work to help increase the family income, Her relatives suggestions that she should get Married in order to lessen the ‘’Luggage’’ on her mother. Through the knowledge observed from SRHR training organized by HOPDEV she was aware and understood about her Rights as well as the effects of early Marriage. In fact she refuses to get married. After telling her story to some of her friends lead her to ‘’HOPDEV team trained as advocates of SRHR issues for Young people encouraged to go back to School. Currently Irakoze is very happily enrolled back to School and she remains a member of HOPDEV, She testified the support she have getting from HOPDEV she aspires to become a teacher and will make her dreams to be true.
HOPDEV is working to empower vulnerable refugee women and girls in the Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
